In 1946, Columbia University anthropologists Ruth Benedict and Gene Weltfish published a pamphlet intended for American troops, entitled The Races of Mankind, which presented in simple language and cartoon illustrations a scientific case against racism. That same year, the pamphlet was adapted in the lovely animated short film The Brotherhood of Man, which makes a humorous but articulate case for equality despite physical dissimilarity and argues for extending to all people “an equal chance in life.”

The Horrifying American Roots of Nazi Eugenics
Fancy a bit of history, just for a change ? Well did you know that America played a crucial role both in inspiring and funding  Hitler’s efforts to create a  “master race” and all of the horrors that went along with that ? I didn’t.Apparently prior to World War II the majority of Americans were uninterested in the plight of the Jews in Germany and many also supported the forced sterilization of the mentally incompetent, crippled  or criminally-inclined. Some states banned interracial marriages as an effort to prevent the tainting of the races and at least 10,000  Americans were forcefully sterilized, many after being labeled vaguely  as ‘sexually wayward,’ ‘depressed,’ ‘deviant,’ or even just ‘bad girls.’Hitler told his comrades just how closely he followed the progress of  the American eugenics movement. “I have studied with great interest,” he  told a fellow Nazi, “the laws of several American states concerning  prevention of reproduction by people whose progeny would, in all  probability, be of no value or be injurious to the racial stock.”But it went beyond  America simply providing inspiration and an example. After  funding a number of eugenics scientists in the USA, the prestigious Rockefeller  Foundation then helped create the German eugenics program and even actively funded work by the infamous Josef Mengele before he went to  Auschwitz. This little-discussed link between America  and Hitlers infamous ‘master race’ programs is something they don’t generally teach in schools. Excuse the admittedly sensational picture used to illustrate the post (I have a weakness for lurid old magazine art) but the subject itself is quite interesting I think and shines a rare light on a murky and little-known part of Americas history.

On January 12, 2010, one day after his 18th birthday, CAPA High School honors student Jordan Trent Miles was ambushed by three plain clothes Pittsburgh police officers, who failed to identify themselves and approached him aggressively. The officers did not say “Stop! Police!”, they jumped out of an unmarked vehicle, one of them yelling “Where’s your money? Where’s the drugs? Where’s the gun?” Miles, never before in trouble with the police and thinking he was being robbed, began to run, and slipped on the icy sidewalk. The officers overtook Miles and administered a brutal beating that left him unrecognizable, ripping dreadlocks out of his head, and continuing to beat him as he lay on the ground after their initial assault, stammering the Lord’s Prayer. There can be no explaining away or excusing what was done to Miles.

The police officers lied about what happened, claiming there was a bulge in his pocket they assumed was a gun but “turned out to be a Mountain Dew bottle”. No bottle was ever entered into evidence, and Jordan and his friends will tell you he doesn’t even drink the soda. The officers also attempted to claim a neighbor reported him as a prowler and attempted to bring assault charges against Miles, which were tossed out of court when the neighbor said she did no such thing. Despite all this, the City of Pittsburgh went on to reward these violent officers with a commendation and, during their suspension, paid them more than they earned while working. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh DA has not brought charges and the Justice Department announced on May 4th, 2011 that it would not prosecute the three officers. The mayor and police chief announced on May 5th that the three officers would be returning to work.

“I feel that my son was racially profiled,” Terez Miles said. “It’s a rough neighborhood; it was after dark. … They assumed he was up to no good because he’s black. My son, he knows nothing about the streets at all. He’s had a very sheltered life, he’s very quiet, he doesn’t know police officers sit in cars and stalk people like that.”

Black people are an entirely different species of human, and gaining their attention requires different marketing methods. We can stick other black people in a commercial, add a catchy beat, compare basketball to dunking a McNugget in one our new sauces, and hope they come running to make us richer than we already are.
What McDonald’s is basically saying when they air commercials like this and this. (via isitscary)

Black Facts

black-culture:

From the end of the Civil War to the mid-1960s, no Southern White male was ever convicted of raping or attempting to rape a Black woman.

That is horrendous.

Is this cited somewhere though?

Minorities earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less initiative. We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.

No, seriously. FUCK you, Sally, you bring so much shame to Oklahomans/women/white people/human beings. We are ashamed of you. I am mortified that you exist and keep fucking talking. Shut the fuck up. Seriously.

More Black Men Now in Prison System than Were Slaves

catbountry:jcfitzner:timetruthhumor:

“More African American men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began,” Michelle Alexander told a standing room only house at the Pasadena Main Library this past Wednesday, the first of many jarring points she made in a riveting presentation.

Alexander, currently a law professor at Ohio State, had been brought in to discuss her year-old bestseller, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Interest ran so high beforehand that the organizers had to move the event to a location that could accommodate the eager attendees. That evening, more than 200 people braved the pouring rain and inevitable traffic jams to crowd into the library’s main room, with dozens more shuffled into an overflow room, and even more latecomers turned away altogether. Alexander and her topic had struck a nerve.

Growing crime rates over the past 30 years don’t explain the skyrocketing numbers of black — and increasingly brown — men caught in America’s prison system, according to Alexander, who clerked for Supreme Court Justice  Harry Blackmun after attending Stanford Law. “In fact, crime rates have fluctuated over the years and are now at historical lows.”

“Most of that increase is due to the War on Drugs, a war waged almost exclusively in poor communities of color,” she said, even though studies have shown that whites use and sell illegal drugs at rates equal to or above blacks. In some black inner-city communities, four of five black youth can expect to be caught up in the criminal justice system during their lifetimes. […]

We’ve made it a felony not to just use drugs, but to use drugs and not be white at the same time. It’s even worse if you use drugs, are not white and poor. It’s a class war and a race war and we’ve essentially reinstated slavery. The American prison populace, which is disproportionately, overwhelmingly Black and Latino are forced to perform unpaid labour as part of their prison sentence. At best, we’ve reinstated a form of indentured servitude. And it is horrifying how few people actually know or care that we’re doing this.

Let’s not forget prison abuse, you guys.
